Alstan Jakubiec teaches architectural energy systems, lighting design, and urban sustainability at SUTD. Alstan also runs the Design for Climate and Comfort Lab, a collection of researchers dedicated to improving satisfaction with and reducing the energy consumption of the built environment through passive environmental strategies. Alstan’s research investigates natural daylighting, designing comfortable buildings, energy efficiency, and urban sustainability metrics. Alstan is currently leading several research projects surrounding the future of human-centric lighting and thermal comfort metrics and the communication and visualization of data in sustainable design.
As a founding board member of two companies, Solemma and Mapdwell, Alstan works to bring the fruits of research on architectural and urban sustainability to designers and consumers. At Solemma, Alstan is the lead developer of DIVA, a highly optimized daylighting and energy modeling plug-in for Rhinoceros 3D. At Mapdwell, he created urban maps of photovoltaic energy generation potential using GIS and simulation technologies in order to encourage the consumption of renewable resources.
