About the Project

This thesis breaks away from conventional design methods for immortality to embrace the process of death to shape and morph a building’s spaces, programs, and circulations to remain relevant to its current context. Instead of designing to resist natural forces and societal change, Dust to Dust aims to explore a form of architecture that decays with the continuity of time to transform its architectural compositions to eventually meet its designed death. Situated in Lalibela, Ethiopia, the chapel under study will gradually transform its spaces over time through manipulating erosion.
