For Prospective Students
Frequently Asked Questions
The uniqueness of our programme stems from our approach to Teaching and Learning. At SUTD, we believe in an ‘Outside-In’ approach whereby we guide our students to study real-world challenges before conceptualising and realising solutions to them. We also believe in active engagement of our industry partners to impart practical knowledge to our students. Take for example our Sustainable Design Option Studio offered every Spring and Summer term. Every Option studio is unique and differs year to year, depending on the instructors we appoint. These instructors may be our faculty members or established practitioners in the field of architecture, and each of them brings distinct specialty and flavour on the numerous facets of architecture. Apart from giving our students many choices to work on a topic of their interest, studios also expose them to the depths of architecture. In another instance, we have Capstone projects for our final year students, which allow them to work with students from other pillars on industry supported projects. These opportunities enhance interpersonal skills and awareness of current issues and solutions, preparing our students to be industry ready, region ready and future ready.
ASD curriculum is also developed with the industry input. Bringing the industry into our curriculum development allows us to equip our students with the skills and knowledge to meet the needs of tomorrow’s industry. Not to mention, it is mandatory for our students to complete at least one internship stint which is looked after by SUTD Career Development Centre. About 16 weeks are set aside for students to have their internships in between the third and fourth terms and/or in between the fifth and sixth terms. Such internship opportunities give our students the needed exposure to understand what the industry wants, and for these experiences to complement their studies later.
The distinctiveness of our curriculum would not be compete without mention of our focus on developing technologically grounded architecture leaders. In the 21st century, it is important that our students know how to harness technology in their fields of work. By going through a common curriculum in their first three terms, when they will study subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Humanities and Engineering, our students are given a solid foundation to support their specialization study in their pillar years. Together with our world-class faculty members and facilities, SUTD is in good stead to produce technologically savvy leaders of tomorrow’s world.
The ASD pillar prepares you to be an architect in a digital era, through an innovative curriculum. ASD provides the framework to reimagine how architects should learn by integrating parametric design and computation in the design process, in combination with the most advanced techniques in digital fabrication.
The ASD Pillar is accredited for the Master of Architecture as a professional degree programme by the Singapore Board of Architects. The intent is to equip ASD pillar graduates with the best foundation for practicing architecture nationally and internationally, providing a high level of technical competency and scientific knowledge while being attuned to the business opportunities and cultural contexts that will make their design projects meaningful and sustainable.

Collaborations
Participate In Internships
We welcome companies to offer undergraduate internships and/or M.Arch structured internship for our students. The 16-week internship programme takes place every summer from May to August for undergraduates and every fall from September to December for M.Arch students. If you are keen to engage our students, please send your interns job descriptions for us to upload via the internship portal by early Jan/May.
Participate In Capstone Projects
We welcome companies to join our capstone programme by providing 8-month long capstone projects that will commence from January through August. Such projects bring together students from different pillars to work in design teams, contributing their respective expertise and skills to solve real-world challenges. Capstone projects also provide students with a realistic design situation where projects usually span multiple disciplines and require team-based efforts to create a solution. Working in teams of 5 to 7 students, the final-year undergraduate students will learn to apply the principles, concepts, techniques that they have learnt to investigate technical and business challenges faced by companies.
Conduct A Seminar
We welcome established architects to share their vision and wealth of expertise. These seminars aim to inspire and provide insights into the intricacies and possibilities of architecture. They receive SIA accreditation for CPD points and are open to public.
Deliver A Lecture
We welcome speakers with proven expertise to deliver in-class guest lectures that supplement our rigorous curriculum. Through these lectures, the speaker will be able to engage with our students personally by sharing real-world insights, broadening their perspectives of their curriculum content and enlivening the classroom with different points of views in the process.
