Cataloging Visual Properties of Materials

2015 - Ongoing

This project aims to quantify a significant unknown in the built environment: reflective properties of architectural finish materials. Materiality is one of the major concerns of architectural design; however, in the methods currently used to predict perception, visual comfort, and lighting performance in buildings, the quality of architectural finish materials is a nearly complete unknown. This has resulted in underperforming buildings and, in the worst case, severe visual comfort problems due to unexpectedly bright reflections.
